Guadalupe, CA - June 27, 2013: The Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Center is pleased to announce that the organization has received funding to support a nature-based creative writing program that the organization will offer in summer programs in Santa Maria and Guadalupe. Selected writing samples will be included in a published book that will be sold through the Dunes Center, with complimentary copies provided to each student whose work is selected for inclusion.

The Dunes Center successfully piloted the program during the Spring quarter in Guadalupe with enthusiastic feedback from the 3rd to 5th graders in the program. The organization can expand the program thanks to a $7,000 grant from the Fund for Santa Barbara and a $750 grant from Altrusa International Inc., of Santa Maria.

The program is designed to encourage children to observe, analyze, and write about nature in an effort to encourage them to appreciate the natural world around them while simultaneously improving their writing skills. A Dunes Center staff person visits the site each week and introduces children to a different nature and writing topic each week. The long-term goal of the program is to create a generation of people that will take responsibility for the world around them.

The Dunes Center will be holding writing classes at Mary Buren Elementary School as part of the ASES (After School Education and Safety) Program, at Riverview Townhomes (through People's Self Help Housing), and in Santa Maria at the Boys and Girls Club.

The program will culminate in a book release event (tentatively set for December) in which students will sign copies of the published books.

As part of this creative writing program, local K-12 students are welcome to submit writing samples to the Dunes Center for consideration to be included in the book. All writing samples must be about nature (preferably local topics).

The Dunes Center is holding a contest for local students to name this book. We are asking students to create and submit potential titles and the reason behind their title submission. The winner will receive a $25 gift certificate generously donated by Toy Zoo and Anything Educational, Too in Santa Maria.

All writing and title entries submitted for consideration must be received by Friday, August 9th via email at admin@dunescenter.org or by regular mail at 1065 Guadalupe Street, Guadalupe, CA 93434.

The program is being funded through a grant from the FUND FOR SANTA BARBARA. The fund for Santa Barbara is a 501c3 nonprofit community foundation dedicated to addressing the root causes of social, economic, environmental and political challenges in Santa Barbara County.

The FUND raises money through donations of all sizes in order to provide grants and technical assistance to local grassroots efforts. The FUND supports community-based projects working for "Change, Not Charity" through a variety of strategies including community organizing, direct action, popular education, legislative advocacy and the arts.

For more than thirty years, the FUND has been at the forefront of responsive and progressive philanthropy in our community, distributing over $5 million to more than 900 grassroots projects working for social justice, fair and affordable housing, accessible education, economic renewal, and a clean and healthy environment for all.

The Dunes Center has a 14-year history of providing educational programming to the local community and tourists that visit the Guadalupe-Nipomo Dunes Complex. Other funding that the Dunes Center has recently received to support educational programming include grants from the Dunes Collaborative, the California Coastal Conservancy, ERG Operating Company, Phillips 66, Towbes Foundation, UCSB's MESA program, Heritage Preservation (funded by the National Institute for Conservation), and the Cecil B. DeMille Foundation.
