  • Adamson House & Malibu Lagoon Museum - Malibu

The enchanted site, where Malibu Creek meets the Pacific Ocean, was once home to the Chumash Indians, who thrived there until the late 18th century. Later, the Rindge family owned 17,000 acres and 20 miles of coastline. The Rindge family’s daughter, Rhoda, and her husband, Merritt Huntley Adamson, used the site to construct a beach house, now the historic Adamson House museum. The Spanish Colonial Revival style home, today a National Historic Site and California Historical Landmark, casts a magical spell, allowing visitors to evoke old California in a way few places can. Built in 1929, it occupies one of the most idyllic oceanfront spots in all of Southern California. Situated near the Malibu Pier between popular Surfrider Beach and the Malibu Lagoon, the house boasts an exotic mix of Spanish and Moorish influences with dazzling displays of decorative tiles and one-of-a-kind craftsmanship including hand-carved doors, hand-painted frescoes, molded ceilings, distinctive cast ironwork and lead-framed bottle glass windows. Equally compelling is the story of the close-knit family who once lived here and whose aura continues to permeate the interior, where most of their original furnishings remain.

  • Angels Flight Railway - Los Angeles

For just $1, you can board one of the two orange and black incline railway cars and ride "The Shortest Railway in the World." This funicular dates back to 1901, when Bunker Hill was one of the most fashionable neighborhoods in Los Angeles and the two little cars, Olivet and Sinai, ferried prominent citizens up and down the steep slope between Hill and Olive Streets. The beloved landmark was dismantled for "urban renewal" of the area in 1969. In the early 1990s, the Railway was refurbished and relocated a half-block south, reopening adjacent to California Plaza in 1996. As short as it is (298 feet), Angels Flight ® is an essential Los Angeles experience. The Angels Flight ® Railway connects 351 South Hill Street, near the Metro Red and Purple Lines Pershing Square subway station at the corner of Fourth and Hill Streets, with the California Plaza Watercourt at 350 South Grand Avenue.

  • Catalina Verdugo Adobe - Glendale

The oldest home in Glendale, The Catalina Verdugo Adobe, nestled in the foothills of the Verdugo Mountains is believed to have been built in 1828. Glendale's Days of the Vedugos Heritage Association began revitalizing the City's most historical homestead in 2001. It is now a museum of early rancho furnishings and valuable antique pieces that represent the Verdugo family living there from 1850-1900. It has helped preserve and restore early Glendale and California history. Jose Maria Verdugo received a land grant of 36,400 acres from the King of Spain in 1784, and formally named the property Rancho San Rafael. At the time of the grant, Verdugo was serving as a Corporal in the Spanish army. The condition of the grant was to work with the Native American Indians and the Californios living in the area, enabling them to grow crops, raise livestock, and exist peacefully together. Upon Don Jose Maria Verdugo's demise in 1831, he had achieved this goal, and his property was divided between his only son, Julio and one of his daughters, Catalina.

The museum's predecessor, the Rancho Santa Gertrudes Historical Society, was founded August 9, 1983, and the Hathaway Ranch Museum was incorporated as an operating foundation in October, 1986. Nadine Hathaway was the driving force behind both the formation and successful daily operation of both the historical society and the museum, and she was enthusiastically involved in the daily activities of the Hathaway Ranch Museum up until late 2000, when failing health finally prevented any further strenuous daily participation. Richard F. (Dick) Hathaway, was also active alongside his wife, Nadine, supporting her various historical interests up until his passing in 1986 with his extensive historical knowledge of the area and his collection of historic books, maps photographs and artifacts. The museum's five-acre site holds some one-hundred and forty years of Hathaway family and community history. Come visit us and take a tour of our five acres of rusty, dusty history, and hear stories about the ranch and early Santa Fe Springs. • Leonis Adobe Museum - Calabasas

Way back in 1844, six years before Los Angeles was incorporated and California was given statehood, this modest little adobe structure was built as... well, nobody knows for sure. One theory is that it served as a stagecoach stop on the El Camino Real, the King's Highway connecting California's missions. Around 1880, Miguel Leonis and his wife, Espiritu Chijulla, the daughter of a Chumash chief, moved into their adobe brick house, enlarging and extensively remodeling the building into the gracious Monterey-Style mansion you see today. Leonis was Basque, born in the French Pyrenees. Once in the U.S., amassing huge wealth from real estate, litigation, and dowry, he came to be known as "El Basquo Grande" and "King of Calabasas" and pretty much ruled a huge chunk of the San Fernando Valley. He died in 1889 from injuries suffered in a wagon accident. In order to inherit the estate, Espiritu had to go to court to prove she was Leonis's legal wife. She ultimately did, but only a year before her death in 1906.

  • Lomita Railroad Museum - Lomita

The Lomita Railroad Museum was the first of its kind west of Denver, Colorado. It was made possible through the generosity of Mrs. Irene Lewis who donated the Museum to the City of Lomita in honor of her late husband, Martin Lewis, in 1967. It was a rather natural thing for Mrs. Lewis to do since she had been a dedicated railroader and spent many years building Little Engines, a business devoted entirely to developing and manufacturing miniature steam operated locomotives which were sold all over the world. The museum proudly displays some of these locomotives.
